Fated: Cinderella's Story by Kaylin Lee (2017)
I believe this is the first novel published by Kaylin Lee, and a very enjoyable read it was. It turns many of the Cinderella themes on their head, while retaining the familiar elements of the fairy tale.
The story takes place in an alternative class-divided world where mages are controlled by non-magical people. I would describe it as a paranormal romance with fairy tale tropes and characters; a blend of two genres. The world building is great, and is one of the things I most liked.
So we all know that Cinderella is an orphaned girl, slaving away for her stepmother and sisters. But in Fated Ella has very good reasons for submitting to the relentless work that leaves her smelling of kitchens; she has a plan, and her stepfamily are not quite as we expect.
Ella has enemies, some of them unseen, and life is gruelling and dangerous. But she’s a brave young woman who will do what it takes to help the people she loves, and stand up for justice. I don’t want to give the plot away, so suffice to say that when the familiar Cinderella motifs pop up, and you think you know how the story is going to go - it goes in another direction! The story moved quickly, and kept me wondering what was going to happen next, which makes for a very quickly read novel!
